Overview L-Type Gantry Crane

What is an L-Type Gantry Crane?

L-Type Gantry Cranes are designed for operations requiring wide side clearance, fast loading access, and efficient outdoor material handling, making them ideal for logistics yards, steel stock areas, pipe and profile handling, container loading zones, and natural stone facilities. Their asymmetrical "L" leg structure provides an unobstructed side approach—allowing trucks, long materials, and oversized loads to be positioned easily, while reducing wind resistance and overall self-weight, resulting in smoother travel and lower energy consumption.

With their precise, stable, and low-maintenance performance, L-type gantry cranes are a highly recommended solution for applications that demand unrestricted side loading and efficient workflow.

Wimac L-type gantry cranes are designed and manufactured in compliance with FEM and ISO standards. They offer reduced wind resistance, lower energy consumption, and high operational efficiency.

Low Wind Resistance

Asymmetrical structure reduces wind load and enables energy savings.

Unobstructed Side Access

Open side passage for easy positioning of trucks and long materials.

L-Type Gantry Crane FAQ

Common questions about Wimac L-type (asymmetric) gantry cranes — advantages, capacity, span and typical applications.

What is an L-type gantry crane?
An L-type gantry crane is an asymmetric portal crane shaped like the letter "L" — one upright leg with wheels at the base, and the opposite end overhanging as a cantilever. The asymmetric design eliminates one runway track on the ground, freeing floor space along that side for production lines, road crossings or material storage.
What is the advantage of the L-type configuration?
The L-type frame requires only one ground runway rather than two parallel rails. This delivers unobstructed side access, lower civil-works cost, and the ability to span over roads, conveyors or existing equipment. It also reduces the bridge dead-weight versus a full portal of the same span.
When is an L-type gantry the best choice?
Choose L-type when you need unobstructed access on one side of the lifting area — e.g. truck loading bays, prefabrication yards, railway sidings or factory aisles where a second floor rail would block traffic. Also a good fit when one side has a building wall or existing column line.
What is the maximum capacity of an L-type gantry crane?
Wimac L-type gantry cranes are produced from 1 t up to 100 t as standard. Higher capacities are possible on an engineered project basis, subject to span and cantilever-arm length.
What FEM / ISO duty class and span ranges are available?
Wimac L-type cranes are typically engineered in the FEM 1Am to 4m / ISO M4 to M8 duty class range, with spans up to 30 m and cantilever arms up to 10 m. Full FEM / ISO reference is in our general information & selection guide.
Where are L-type gantry cranes typically used?
Typical applications include prefabrication and concrete yards, steel stockyards, shipyard outfitting bays, container loading, railway maintenance and any outdoor or semi-outdoor site where one-sided ground access is preferred. Also used in process crane duty for steel-mill outdoor handling.
